Safeguarding Marine Biodiversity: Camarines Norte Acts Against Crown of Thorns Outbreak

The Provincial Government of Camarines Norte, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist – Fisheries Development Division (OPAg-FDD), spearheaded the annual Crown of Thorns (COT) extraction activity in Guijanlo Island in Capalonga, Pulongguit-guit in Sta. Elena, and Quinamanucan & Calaguas Islands in Vinzons, Camarines Norte.

The initiative is part of the province’s continuing efforts to address Crown of Thorns outbreaks, which pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Known for their destructive feeding behavior, Crown of Thorns starfish consume large amounts of live coral, leading to severe coral reef degradation and loss of marine biodiversity.

This year’s three-day activity was conducted in collaboration with 60 local volunteers and OPAg-FDD staff, highlighting the importance of collective action in marine conservation. Prior to the extraction, participants were given orientation on proper handling and disposal of Crown of Thorns, along with safety and precautionary measures to protect volunteers from potential toxic exposure and waste contamination. Removing these coral predators helps to restore reef health and protect vital fish habitats that support the livelihood of coastal communities.

The Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining interventions that safeguard the province’s rich marine resources for future generations.
