Maximizing Pili Potential: A Training on Production, Oil Extraction, and Resin Tapping

The Training on Pili Production, Oil Extraction, and Resin (Manila Elemi) Tapping is one of the activities conducted by the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) through the Crops Division, headed by Ms. Marilyn Puatu, Supervising Agriculturist. This initiative aims to equip pili farmers and processors with the skills to fully utilize different parts of the pili, demonstrating practical and efficient techniques for production and processing.

Twenty-five (25) pili growers and processors participated in the training, which provided them with valuable knowledge on production, extraction, and tapping processes with Mr. Serge Lamadrid, a Pili Processor and owner of Litz Pili Candies, along with Mr. Ador Sanchez, as esteemed resource persons.

Engr. Celeste Salvanera shared valuable insights into the current status, challenges, and opportunities within the pili industry. One key issue highlighted was the fluctuating buying price of pili nuts which current ranges from 0.25 to 0.50 cents per piece, with most buyers coming from Camarines Sur. This pricing instability presents a significant concern for local growers. In response, the Camarines Norte Pili Growers and Processors Cooperative voiced their intention to reactivate the organization. Their goal is to promote pili products within the province while stabilizing market prices. They aim to achieve this by advocating for the passage of relevant resolutions and ordinances, fostering a more sustainable and profitable pili industry in the province.

Mr. Lamadrid and Mr. Sanchez provided an in-depth discussion on advanced techniques for Pili Oil extraction, production, and postharvest technologies, emphasizing the potential livelihood opportunities and expanding market prospects for farmers. They lead a hands-on demonstration on proper pili tapping methods, reassuring participants that these techniques do not harm the trees, as supported by research conducted by Dr. Arsenio Ella, a retired scientist from the Department of Science and technology (DOST).

In addition, Mr. lamadrid demonstrated the oil extraction process using various types of equipment and showcased innovative uses for pili byproducts, such as the production of pandecillos and soy sauce made from pili pulp, highlighting the versatility of the crop.

As the training concluded, participants expressed their deep gratitude to the resource persons, recognizing that the valuable knowledge and practical skills they had gained would significantly enhance their farming operations. They noted that the training would not only add value to their pili products but also help them improve their market strategies, paving the way for increased profitability and sustainable agricultural practices.
